Junior Software Engineer
Location: Remote (based in or near Baton Rouge, LA preferred - though not required)
Employment Type: Full-time, Entry-Level
About the Role
We’re looking for a motivated Junior Software Engineer to join our growing team at Bluefin Data. This position is designed for early-career developers who already have a foundation in software development and are eager to grow their skills in a collaborative, production environment.
You’ll work closely with senior developers and product leaders to support and enhance our core platform, VESL, which helps government agencies, private organizations, and researchers collect and manage fisheries and environmental data. This role offers a unique opportunity to learn modern development practices while contributing to meaningful, real-world impact.
What You’ll Do
- Take ownership of your learning by exploring new concepts, techniques, and approaches to problem-solving as part of daily development work
- Apply critical thinking when facing unknowns - ask thoughtful questions, investigate root causes, and propose well-reasoned solutions
- Approach challenges with curiosity and persistence, balancing independence with collaboration
- Contribute to the design, development, and continuous improvement of our software and processes
- Write clean, maintainable, and thoughtful code that reflects care and understanding of the problem space
- Engage in open discussion and feedback through code reviews and team collaboration
- Identify ways of improving processes - both your own and the company as a whole
- Continuously look for opportunities to grow, adapt, and refine both your technical and professional skills
What We’re Looking For
- Some experience or education in software development - personal projects, coursework, or internships welcome
- Familiarity with at least one modern programming language (preferably C#, JavaScript, or TypeScript)
- Eagerness to learn, grow, and take initiative in a supportive environment
- Strong communication and collaboration skills, especially in a remote setting
- Must be eligible to work in the United States (no visa sponsorship available)
