The Smart Surfaces Coalition (SSC) is a fast-growing non-profit organization made up of 40+ leading NGOs from a wide range of industries including architecture and design, city law and policy, energy, planning, urban data analytics, public health, and environmental justice. The Coalition supports the rapid adoption of Smart Surfaces—a term referring to the integrated deployment of reflective, porous, and green surfaces, solar PV, and urban trees—in cities in the US and globally. This is one of the largest, least deployed, and most cost-effective climate change mitigation and adaptation strategies and is central to addressing urban environmental justice issues. SSC is seeking a passionate and enthusiastic individual with 1–3 years of directly relevant, substantial experience to serve as a Junior Software Developer (part-time).

Job Description

The Junior Software Developer will work under the supervision of the Software Architect and Data Project Manager to support the development of SSC’s Benefit-Cost Analysis Tool, which quantifies the co-benefits of Smart Surface deployment in urban contexts.

What you’ll be doing

Helping develop the web server and browser user interface that provides city-level financial, temperature reduction, and avoided emissions benefit calculations for user’s modeled scenarios.
Working with the Software Architect to design new features and refine existing ones.
Investigating bugs and anomalous results and reporting their root cause. You’ll work with the Software Architect to address them.
Helping prepare the configuration for new ‘flavors’ of the Benefit-Cost Analysis Tool and any code required to support new configurations.
Supporting the introduction of new benefits with exploratory code (e.g. computational notebooks, prototypes) that develops and deepens our understanding of how the benefit performs with a range of inputs and supporting data.
Finding, cleaning, processing and unifying supporting datasets from their disparate original forms.
Working primarily in Clojure (backend) and ClojureScript + React.js (browser) on Linux for production code.

Responsibilities

Assist in the development, testing, and maintenance of software applications.
Write clean, scalable, and efficient code under the supervision of senior developers.
Collaborate with cross-functional teams to gather requirements and provide technical solutions.
Participate in code reviews and contribute to team knowledge sharing.
Troubleshoot and debug applications to optimize performance and functionality.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Architecture, Environmental Studies, Climate/Energy Science, Urban Planning, Geography, Engineering, Public Health, or other related field
1+ years of experience in web development and/or software development
Basic understanding how web servers and browsers work (HTTP, HTML)
Basic understanding of writing and debugging Javascript
Fast typist
Know how to use a Linux shell
Effective self-starter who takes ownership and accountability for project deliverables with a demonstrated ability to multitask
Ability to work and communicate well with project managers and team members
Strong time management and ability to manage a remote work environment
Ability to work independently and to exercise judgment and creativity

Preferred Qualifications

Background in statistics (scientific or finance)
Understanding of database management systems and SQL (preferably PostgreSQL)
Familiarity with version control systems (e.g., Git)
GIS proficiency, (PostGIS, QGIS)
Functional programming experience
Lisp experience (Clojure preferred)
Experience running web servers
Design eye, experience with CSS
