About the Position
The Mid-level Software Developer is dedicated to adding new features and fixing bugs in the existing code. Additionally, this role will involve peer review of other developers’ code to provide constructive feedback/improvements, with the goal of continually improving the application within the constraints of the current architecture. The Mid-level Developer will have the ability to answer questions from our team and our customers and knows when to reach out to others for help.
We have a small (but mighty!) development team who are ready and willing to do a bit of everything. In this role, you will not only be building out enhancements to our existing features, you will be able to contribute fully to the development of entirely new features -- taking a handful of user stories, thinking through the existing codebase, and proposing a path forward that minimizes code debt while maximizing usefulness for our users. Once you’ve had the chance to fully learn AdvicePay and settle into the responsibilities of your role, you’ll have the opportunity to dig deeper into the areas that interest you most!
What You’ll Be Doing
- Partner closely with other developers to add new features, streamline existing features, and provide a magical experience for our users
- Take designs and break them into smaller pieces of coherent work
- Create accurate estimates, with the full freedom to communicate what a task will take before you start and the leeway to adjust an estimate as soon as you discover new roadblocks or unforeseen work
- Push back on designs when they create major issues in the code, never just accepting what is requested to be built but providing valuable feedback for how to save time or simplify the build to improve code maintainability
- Review pull requests well. “Well” means:
- Catching bugs
- Giving helpful suggestions
- All in all, making the code more maintainable, readable, and optimized (SQL, memory, speed, etc.)
- Write good tests that flesh out edge cases
- Become an expert on our API, add to it, write supporting docs, etc.
- Analyze, investigate, and address technical debt
- Understand common vulnerabilities and work to prevent them (XSS, OWASP Top 10)
- Keep abreast of new technologies and best practices to improve and support areas such as developer experience, DevOps pipelines, security, and infrastructure
- Dig deeper into possible bugs from users and automated feedback
- Jump on Support/Sentry and gauge the appropriate solution
- Answer technical/dev-related questions from Team Members, provide support to them, and give good information so that they can address customers properly
- Meet with our customers or sales prospects to help them find solutions
- Perform tasks in production databases from tickets
- Other duties as assigned
